Innovation Recognised in 2013 Winners |

Public Safety

A virtual library project and an initiative to harness social media were worthy winners at the 2013 Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) Awards. For the fourth consecutive year Motorola Solutions, in partnership with AFAC, awarded the “AFAC & Motorola Knowledge Innovation Award” in two categories: agency and individual.

The NSW State Emergency Service won the agency award for the development of the Virtual Library Project, which shares valuable knowledge across its 10,000 members.

Individual category winner was Inspector Robyn Favelle from the NSW Rural Fire Service, in recognition of her efforts in working with volunteer members of remote rural brigades in far western NSW. Inspector Favelle harnessed the potential of social media for connecting landowners, volunteer fire fighters and incident management teams and developed an operation response coordination system using existing social media sites, such as Facebook, to allow individual members of remote brigades to obtain critical fire related information in a timely manner.
